A room with existing wallpaper — the starting point before removal.

Step 1 — Identify the Wallpaper Type

Three categories of wallpaper require different removal approaches:

Modern strippable (peelable)

Released since the 1990s on a strippable backing. Usually peels off cleanly when you lift a corner. The fastest removal.

Traditional paper (paste-the-sheet)

Older installations or designer hand-prints. Adhered with paste. Needs soaking and careful scraping.

Vinyl-coated or vinyl wallcovering

Top vinyl layer often peels off, leaving a paper backing behind. Backing needs soaking and stripping separately.

Step 2 — Test the Corner

Pick a corner near the top of the wall and try to lift the paper with a putty knife. If it peels off in large sheets cleanly, you have strippable wallpaper — the easy case. If it tears in small pieces or refuses to come off, you have traditional paper that needs soaking.

Step 3 — Score and Soak

For traditional paper:

  • Score the wallpaper with a scoring tool. Score in small circular patterns to perforate the paper without gouging the wall underneath.
  • Apply a removal solution: warm water + a few drops of dish soap, or warm water + white vinegar (1:1), or a commercial wallpaper remover (DIF, Piranha) per label instructions.
  • Saturate the wallpaper. Use a garden sprayer for large walls.
  • Let soak 15–20 minutes. The solution needs to penetrate the paper and re-wet the adhesive.
  • Test a section — the paper should now lift more easily.

Step 4 — Scrape Carefully

Use a wide putty knife (4–6 inches) at a low angle. Push, do not chop — chopping gouges the drywall face paper.

If the paper resists, re-soak that section and wait another 10–15 minutes. Patience here saves drywall repair later.

Step 5 — Remove Adhesive Residue

The wallpaper is off but the adhesive residue is still there. This is the step most DIY removers skip. Leftover adhesive will cause the next layer (new wallpaper or paint) to fail.

  • Sponge the wall with warm water + a gentle adhesive remover (TSP or wallpaper-paste remover).
  • Wipe with a clean sponge and fresh water until the wall no longer feels tacky when dry.
  • Let dry fully before any next-step work.

Step 6 — Inspect and Repair

Run your hand across the wall in good light. Look for:

  • Gouges from the putty knife — patch with joint compound.
  • Torn drywall face paper — apply a skim coat over the torn area.
  • Stains or residue — spot-clean and seal with a stain-blocking primer.

Once the wall is smooth and stable, prime with a wallpaper-grade primer (if installing new wallpaper) or paint-grade primer (if painting next). See our wall prep guide.

Wallpaper removal is patient work. Score, soak, wait, scrape, repeat. The job rewards the people who do not rush. The wall under the paper has to survive removal — if you gouge it, you spend hours on repair.

When to Hire a Pro

DIY wallpaper removal works for small rooms and modern strippable wallpapers. Call a pro when:

  • You have multiple layers of old wallpaper.
  • The wall is unpainted/unprimed drywall (high tear-out risk).
  • The paper is from before 1980 (may have multiple layers of paste and treatments).
  • You plan to install new wallpaper immediately after — pros can do removal, prep, prime, and install as one project.
  • You have a two-story foyer, stairwell, or other tall-wall situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does wallpaper removal take?
A small powder room: 2–4 hours for strippable, full day for traditional paper. A bedroom: full day for strippable, 1–2 days for traditional.
Will removal damage my drywall?
Properly primed drywall under wallpaper survives removal cleanly. Unprimed drywall is at higher risk for face-paper tear during scraping — we repair with skim coat when this happens.
Can I just paint over the wallpaper?
Generally no. Paint over wallpaper tends to bubble, peel, and look uneven. Always remove the paper first.
What removal products do you recommend?
Commercial wallpaper removers (DIF, Piranha) work well. Warm water + white vinegar is a gentler DIY option. Always test on a small area first.
Can you remove and reinstall same day?
Sometimes. Removal + prep usually needs the wall to dry overnight before new wallpaper goes up. We schedule accordingly.
