The Seven-Step Process

1

Initial consultation

Email or call with photos and dimensions. For complex spaces we visit on site. For most Houston residential rooms we can quote from clear photos.

2

Material selection (if needed)

If you are still choosing wallpaper, we send samples or you visit the showroom. We help you read the pattern in your light and recommend material for the room type.

3

Written estimate

You receive a clear roll count, labor estimate, prep scope, and total project cost in writing before anything is ordered or scheduled.

4

Wallpaper order

We confirm sizes, dye lot timing, and lead time. For most stock wallpaper, 1–3 weeks. Designer hand-prints and custom items can take longer.

5

Wall prep day

Removal of any existing wallpaper, skim coat where the wall needs it, sanding, and a wallpaper-grade primer. The wall must be smooth, primed, and fully dry before paper goes on.

6

Install day

Panel layout planning, careful seam alignment, pattern matching, and trim work. A standard powder room takes about one day; a full bedroom one to two days.

7

Walkthrough & touch-up

We review every seam, every corner, every cut with you before we leave. Touch-up rolls are stored at our showroom for clients who order extra.

What “Wall Prep” Actually Means

Wall prep is the difference between a wallpaper that lasts 15 years and one that lifts in 6 months. The wall under the paper has to be smooth, primed, and stable.

For new construction with smooth, primed drywall, prep is light: clean the wall and verify smoothness. For older walls or walls with previous wallpaper, prep can include:

  • Wallpaper removal. If old paper is present, strip cleanly, scrape adhesive residue, repair any face-paper damage.
  • Skim coat. Thin layer of joint compound to bring textured walls (knockdown, orange peel) back to smooth.
  • Sanding. Smooth the skim coat to a wallpaper-ready finish.
  • Primer. Wallpaper-grade primer (not standard paint primer) for proper adhesion and easy future removal.

Pattern Matching: Straight vs Drop vs Random Match

Three pattern-match types exist:

Straight Match

Pattern repeats at the same vertical position across panels. Most efficient on paper usage.

Drop Match (half-drop or full-drop)

Each panel shifts the pattern up or down. Requires more rolls due to waste at top and bottom of panels.

Random Match

Pattern has no specific match point (common in grasscloth, some textures). No waste at seams but panel layout still requires planning.

The first hour of any wallpaper install is the wall. The wallpaper itself is the easy part. Skip the wall prep, and the install will fail no matter how good the paper.

Tools and Materials We Bring

A typical Houston install includes: drop cloths, painter’s tape, plumb line, level, sharp wallpaper blades and snap-off knives, wallpaper-grade adhesive (correct paste for the substrate), smoothing brushes, seam roller, sponge and clean water, ladders and (for tall walls) scaffolding. For grasscloth and natural-fiber installs, additional dust-free workflow and color-matched paste.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a typical install take?
Powder room: 1 day. Bedroom: 1–2 days. Two-story foyer: 2–3 days. Commercial projects: scheduled to your construction calendar.
Do I need to be home during the install?
Not required. Most of our Houston residential clients let us in and check on us mid-day or at end of day for the walkthrough.
What if you find unexpected wall damage?
We stop and call. You see photos. We propose the additional prep + cost. No surprises at the end.
Will there be a smell?
Wallpaper-grade adhesives are low-VOC. Some primer odor for the first hour. We ventilate as we work.
What if I do not like the result?
We walk every seam and every corner with you before we leave. If something needs adjusting we adjust it. That is the point of the walkthrough.
