Statement wall with elegant wallpaper in a Houston home

Wallpaper vs Paint: How to Decide for Your Room

Paint and wallpaper both finish a wall, but they do different things. After more than a decade hanging wallpaper across Houston, this is how we think about the choice when a client is torn.

When Paint Wins

Paint wins when the room needs flexibility, when the wall surface is complex (lots of architectural detail), when the room will be repainted often (kids’ rooms during the early years), or when the budget is very tight. Paint is fast, forgiving, and reversible.

Paint also wins for ceilings in most cases (unless the design specifically calls for a fifth-wall wallpaper treatment), and for walls that take heavy abuse (mudrooms, laundry).

Sometimes the wall just needs a primer-and-paint refresh — and that is the right call.

When Wallpaper Wins

Wallpaper wins when you want pattern, texture, depth, or a finished look that paint cannot match. A powder room with one wall of grasscloth reads warmer and more layered than the same room with one wall of paint. A dining room with a Cole & Son hand-print becomes an instant heirloom space.

Wallpaper also wins for first-impression rooms (entries, powder rooms, dining rooms) and ceilings used as a feature, and for spaces where character matters more than maintenance.

Cost, Side by Side

For a single-feature wall (~80 sq ft), professional paint runs around $200–$400 in the Houston market for paint + labor on a smooth, primed wall. Professional wallpaper installation for the same wall runs around $300–$550 for labor plus the wallpaper itself (typically $80–$300+ for designer paper).

So wallpaper costs roughly 2–4x as much as paint up front for the same wall — but lasts 10–15 years vs a typical paint refresh every 3–5 years, and creates a finish that paint simply cannot produce.

Paint is a finish. Wallpaper is a design element. When a client asks “which one for my dining room,” the real question is whether they want a wall or whether they want a room with depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wallpaper over paint?
Yes — most wallpapers install beautifully over a properly primed, smooth painted wall. We may need to skim coat textured walls first.
Can I paint over wallpaper?
Generally no — paint over wallpaper traps moisture and tends to bubble. The correct approach is removing the wallpaper, prepping the wall, and then painting.
Which wears better in a high-traffic room?
Type II 20oz vinyl wallpaper actually outperforms paint in most high-traffic settings — it is more scrubbable and resists scuffs better than satin paint.
Can I use wallpaper in a kid’s room?
Yes — modern non-woven and vinyl wallpapers are washable and durable. Look for “scrubbable” rated papers. We install many nursery and kids’ rooms across Houston each year.
How do I sample both?
Order a quart of paint and a sample wallpaper roll. Tape them next to each other on the wall for a week. Look in morning light, afternoon light, evening lamp light. The answer usually becomes obvious.
