How Much Wallpaper Do I Need?

The Short Answer

For a standard 8 ft ceiling, divide the perimeter of the room by the roll width, then multiply by the wall height in feet, divide by the per-roll coverage in square feet, multiply by 1.10–1.20 (waste from pattern repeat), and round up to whole rolls. Always add one extra roll on top of that math.

The Five-Step Method

Measure your walls

Multiply wall width by ceiling height. Add up each wall. Subtract for large openings (door = ~21 sq ft, window = ~15 sq ft for a standard double-hung). The result is your wall area.

Check the roll specs

Each roll lists coverage (square feet) and pattern repeat (inches). Larger pattern repeats waste more paper at the top and bottom of each panel — sometimes 15–25% more.

Divide and round up

Divide your wall area by the roll’s listed coverage. Multiply by 1.10–1.20 depending on pattern repeat. Round up to whole rolls.

Add one extra roll

Always. Dye lots vary between print runs. Touch-ups in three years are part of the lifetime of a wallpaper. Our showroom holds touch-up rolls for clients who order extra at install.

Worked Example: A 10×12 Bedroom

Walls: two 12 ft walls (12 × 8 = 96 sq ft each) + two 10 ft walls (10 × 8 = 80 sq ft each) = 352 sq ft total.

Don’t subtract any door or windows.

If the roll covers 56 sq ft and has a 21-inch pattern repeat, multiply by 1.15 = 404.8 sq ft of paper needed. 404.8 / 56 = 7.22 rolls. Round up to 8. Add 1 extra for touch-up. Order 9 rolls.

Do I really need an extra roll?
Yes — always. Dye lots vary between print runs, panels can tear during install, and small repairs are part of any wallpaper’s 10–15 year lifetime. We store touch-up rolls at our showroom for clients who order extra.
What if I have an unusual pattern repeat?
Send the product spec sheet and we will calculate it for you. Larger repeats (24+ inches) waste more paper. Drop-match patterns waste more than straight-match.
Can I return unused rolls?
Unused, unopened rolls in original packaging may be eligible per our return policy. Always check before ordering bulk.
What about murals?
Mural wallpapers are sold as panel sets sized to specific wall dimensions. Send wall dimensions and we will confirm what panel size to order.
Should I order all rolls at once?
Yes — same dye lot guarantees color match. Different print runs can show small variations between dye lots.
