Grasscloth Wallpaper: The Complete Guide

Grasscloth is a category of its own — hand-woven natural fibers pressed onto a paper or non-woven backing to create a surface that has actual depth. Unlike printed wallpaper, grasscloth changes as the light changes, which is exactly the appeal.

What Grasscloth Actually Is

The category covers a family of natural-fiber wallcoverings: jute, sisal, abaca, hemp, linen, and other plant materials, woven or laid in parallel and adhered to a backing. Each panel is a hand-made textile, which is why each one looks slightly different.

The texture is the point. Light catches the fibers from one angle and shadows them from another. The wall reads warm, organic, and quiet — everything painted drywall cannot do.

Where Grasscloth Works

Grasscloth performs best in dry rooms with good light:

Dining rooms

The most popular grasscloth installation. Warm, layered, feels like a finished room rather than a decorated one.

Primary bedrooms

Behind the bed or all four walls. Texture absorbs sound and adds a calm, layered quality.

Formal living rooms & libraries

Especially in Houston traditional and transitional homes where the room calls for depth without competing pattern.

Entries and foyers

High first-impression spaces where texture catches the natural light from the door.

Where Grasscloth Does NOT Work

Grasscloth absorbs moisture and is not washable. Avoid:

  • Full bathrooms with showers (humidity and direct moisture).
  • Kitchens directly behind cooking surfaces.
  • Kids’ rooms with active hand-print risk.
  • Mudrooms, laundry rooms, garage interiors.

For those spaces, look at Type II vinyl wallpapers that mimic grasscloth texture — they look similar but tolerate the conditions.

Why Grasscloth Seams Are Different

Every wallpaper installation has seams. With printed wallpapers, the seams are designed to blend into the pattern. With grasscloth, the fibers run in slightly different directions across panels — the seams are visible by design. That is part of the look, not a defect.

What separates a great grasscloth install from an average one is panel planning. We sequence panels so the visual rhythm is intentional rather than accidental. That requires an experienced installer — it is not a paper to learn on.

Grasscloth is the most rewarding wallpaper to install when it goes right and the hardest to recover when it goes wrong. We always plan the panel layout before we touch the wall.

Cost and Care

Grasscloth wallpaper typically runs $90–$300 per roll for designer brands. Installation labor on grasscloth runs slightly higher than smooth papers because of panel planning and careful seam work.

Care: dust gently with a soft brush or vacuum brush attachment. Spot-clean with a barely damp cloth only if absolutely needed. Avoid scrubbing — the fibers will fuzz.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the seams be visible?
Yes — intentionally. Grasscloth fibers run in slightly different directions across panels, so the seam lines are visible. That is the character of the material, not a defect. We plan panel layout in advance so the rhythm reads intentional.
Will the color be exactly even across the wall?
Natural-fiber materials have natural color variation. We sequence panels to keep variation looking organic rather than splotchy. Order all rolls in one batch (same dye lot).
How long does grasscloth last?
In a dry room with proper installation, 15+ years easily. Many of our Houston grasscloth installs from 2012–2014 still look fresh.
Can I install grasscloth myself?
We do not recommend it. Panel planning, paste selection, and seam alignment all require experience. Grasscloth installation mistakes are very visible and very hard to fix.
What brands do you carry?
We carry grasscloth across most of our designer brands, including high-end natural-fiber lines and accessible options from York, Magnolia Home, Wow Wallcoverings, and others. Visit our showroom to see and feel the textures.
