Best Wallpaper for Bathrooms (Houston Guide)

Bathrooms are the room people most want to wallpaper and the room they most worry about ruining. Houston humidity, water splashes, and steam all matter — but with the right wallpaper choice, bathroom wallpaper performs beautifully for 10+ years.

What Works in a Houston Bathroom

The right wallpaper for a bathroom isn’t about pattern first — it’s about material and how the room actually gets used.

Type II 20oz Vinyl

The most durable wallpaper category. Washable, scrubbable, resistant to humidity. Best for primary bathrooms with showers.

Non-woven (washable rated)

Modern designer wallpapers on non-woven backing. Most are rated washable. Good for powder rooms and half baths.

Coated Paper (rinsable)

Many designer hand-prints have a protective coating that makes them appropriate for half baths and powder rooms.

Avoid: Uncoated paper, grasscloth in primary baths

Uncoated traditional paper and grasscloth are beautiful but absorb moisture. Use them in dry rooms instead.

Powder Rooms vs Full Bathrooms

Most Houston bathroom wallpaper projects start in the powder room. Powder rooms have no shower, lower humidity, and a smaller wall area to commit to. They are forgiving spaces for a first wallpaper project.

Full bathrooms with showers need more careful material selection: Type II vinyl or scrubbable non-woven, installed with a wallpaper-grade adhesive rated for damp environments, and ideally not directly beside the shower spray zone (use tile there, wallpaper around it).

In Houston, humidity is the issue more than splashes. Run the bath vent fan during showers. With the right paper and proper installation, bathroom wallpaper lasts as long as the rest of the room.

Patterns That Read Well in Bathrooms

Bathrooms tend to be smaller rooms with limited natural light. Three pattern approaches work well:

Bold and small-room confident

Dark patterns — deep navy floral, black geometric, jewel-tone damask — turn small powder rooms into statement spaces.

Textured neutrals

Soft grasscloth in primary baths (use Type II coated equivalent for humidity), or textured neutrals that read warm and finished.

Botanical or coastal

Light, airy patterns — Rifle Paper Co. florals, soft blues, breezy palettes — pair beautifully with white tile and natural-stone vanities.

Ceiling wallpaper (the fifth wall)

Often overlooked. A patterned ceiling in a powder room transforms the space without committing to four walls of pattern.

Textured wallpapers work in dry areas of bathrooms — vanity walls, accent walls away from the shower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will wallpaper survive the Houston humidity?
Yes — with the right material. Type II 20oz vinyl is engineered for humid commercial environments and works beautifully in Houston bathrooms. Coated non-woven and washable papers also perform well in powder rooms and half baths.
Can I install wallpaper next to the shower?
Not directly in the shower spray zone — that is tile territory. Wallpaper can go on the rest of the bathroom walls, and we install a wallpaper-grade adhesive rated for damp environments.
Will the wallpaper peel from steam?
A properly prepped wall (primed, smooth) + a moisture-rated adhesive + a vented bathroom = wallpaper that lasts. The most common failure cause is shortcuts on wall prep, not the wallpaper itself.
What about wallpaper behind the toilet or vanity?
Those are the easiest walls. Less moisture, less direct contact. Often the highest-visibility wall in the room.
How long will bathroom wallpaper last?
10–15 years is typical with the right material and proper installation. Many of our Houston bathroom installs from 2014–2016 are still looking sharp.
